Freakshakes — sometimes not knowing is better for your health

What the Freak? I ran across some articles on these crazy creations that are making everyone across the pond quite mad. I know several people heading to London this summer so I thought I would clue you in so you can add a stop to your itinerary. Remember to take a bib and possibly some insulin and maybe check the website to see how long the queue is.

The original idea seems to have been launched in Canberra, Australia but not long after it hopped a plane to the UK to spread sugary joy to the British. The name Freakshake is quite apropos when you get a look at some of them. Sure, they kinda resemble our good old milkshake, but even before the ice cream goes in, the “freak” starts to come out. They start by liberally slathering  the glass with sauces, marsh mellow or toppings. In goes the ice cream which makes you start to think that “freak” is a little overboard, but then comes the baked goods. They’ve done some work to figure out how to balance the weight of the assorted sugar bombs that decorate the tops. And, as if one baked good atop a Freakshake wasn’t freaky enough, they manage to stick their tongue out at gravity by stacking multiple treats on top of each other. Add some more sauces and toppings and perhaps some fruit (just to be funny). And, voila, you have your Freakshake!

For those of us poor souls who aren’t traveling anywhere near a shop selling these babies, well, we’ll just have to try our hand at making our own versions. We’ll need one large mug and a platter for the inevitable drippings, lots of sauces, ice cream, baked goods, sprinkles, cream, blow torches, a straw/spoon/knife and plenty o’ napkins!!
