Serendipitous Sunspots

They happen often enough in my line of work; sometimes when I don’t want them to. Most times I work hard to reposition, repose, reshoot. But for certain images…oh man, do I love them. Those little spots of sun that dance through into your frame.  They add a little extra emotion to the picture, whether it’s giddiness or serenity. They mean that the sun is out but the light is soft and there is a little bit of magic in the air. I’m not one to add them as overlays in post production. They either happen or they don’t. And I certainly don’t want to deliver them in the main portraits for clients. But, to have a few dancing through individual shots or candid images in a client’s gallery hopefully helps cement the memories we made playing in the sunshine together.

They really do make me happy–so much so that I used them for my logo years ago when I moved to Texas. You may not have got what those little circles under my name were supposed to be,  but that is what they represent. It’s what I hope for every photography session, that a little bit of magic finds its way in.

I had the Meyer clan out recently for their family session and we had a ball playing with an old farm truck. With 6 kids and a puppy there was no shortage of action. They ran, they climbed, they took turns “driving” and flipping every button in the cabin, they swung on the swings and occasionally they stopped to smile for my camera. I’ll certainly be posting more images from their session–6 kids and a puppy!!!!– but for now I thought I would include some of the fun shots that the sun danced through.
